We've had to help three furry friends
cross that Rainbow Bridge of late
Each one for different reasons
but each shared the common traits
Of being miserable, in pain, and
with no hope of a reprieve
But as I held the last one in my arms
I felt just a touch of envy

The end of suffering and pain

We hope it's peaceful as it seemed
That it was the thing to do

With my own time coming due

three IV shots in succession
A saline rinse, a sedative
then the heart stopping potassium
And as she quietly faded off
I could only be most grateful
Her suffering was finally done
her end did not seem painful

Demand diseases do their worst

And I have to wonder if, when their time comes
Will all those moralists and legal staff and ethicists succumb
Fighting for each breath like they demand of us
To keep legal all our wills and all our trusts

Or will they cheat when they see their own demise
And take that Rainbow Bridge they've us denied?

I've sworn that I will not go first
but that's a strange kind of a duel
There aren't too many ways for human
