about

I wrote this a few years ago for the son of a good friend of ours who passed away from cancer. Since I just posted my father-in-law's memorial song, I thought I'd get this one back into shape and post it as well.

lyrics

A Child Died Today
Gary "MoFilker" Hanak
Key: E

(Written for Mark Vetrone, son of Don Vetrone. 'Uncle Don' is and has been a close family friend for decades, and this song was written as much for Don as it was for Mark.)

vs1:
A child died today
Not a child, most would say
He had children of his own
And his hair was gray

But a man I know has called him 'son'
Since the day his life begun
So a child he was, until his dying day

ch:
A father's love, a child's joy
These and more lived in this boy
Someone's brother, someone's son
Different people, but all were one
There in a child

vs2:
He was musician, and machinist
And when he spoke, to get the gist
You'd have to realize that when he talked
It was mostly with his hands

But if you paid attention
You would see that his intentions
Were really not all that hard to understand

ch:
A father's love, a child's joy
These and more lived in this boy
Someone's brother, someone's son
Different people, but all were one
There in a child

(instrumental - chorus - haiku is spoken here)

vs3:
Now we've come to say goodbye
Those cherished moments seen in your mind's eye
Keep them safe, keep them close
Keep them easy to recall

For all of you who knew him well
Now and then, a story tell
And share a memory amongst you all

ch:
A father's love, a child's joy
These and more lived in this boy
Someone's brother, someone's son
Different people, but all were one
There in a child

haiku::
A child died today
Though most would not see him that way
His hair was gray

With children of his own
And years of life he'd known
As part of Clan Vetrone

But a man I know
Has called him 'son' since day one
A child he becomes

Musician, machinist
When he spoke it was most often
Through his hands

His intentions were not all that hard
To understand
If you listened
