vs:
Sometimes life is happy, oft times it's a pain
But it beats the alternative, so goes the refrain
Some bad news last winter has caused me to ponder
On what is important as through it I wander
Now there's lot of things that beg for attention
And I mean to address them with purest intention
But there's one thing that must be the top of the list
To put it succinctly, that one thing is this--

A bag and a lake--I don't care what it takes

They're fuzzy and cute--doesn't mean I won't shoot
I will hang on until their demise
Every one has a cause, and this one is mine
It's my line in the sand--proud and stalwart I stand

vs:
There are choices you make when you're young and unseasoned
Sometimes they work out but most times they're not reasoned
My wife was a winner, my family is marvelous
My career choice was fortunate--the path somewhat tortuous
But the pets--yes, the pets that we once thought adorable--
They may still have their moments, but mostly they're horrible
And like time shares, they seem to have no expiration
Which has driven me to voice this heart felt exhortation

They were cuter as kittens--now they'd look great as mittens

They're both old but it seems they have long lived cat genes
I will hang on until their demise

They've cost us a fortune, and the older they get
The worse it becomes twixt the food and the vet
Every time after them I am cleaning up after
Their hairballs, and plant pukes, I hear feline laughter
They've claimed both the chairs and they chew on loose string
It's like I'm the servant and they're king and queen

"...wait, they're cats. Worshipped as gods in ancient Egypt...
Cats have never forgotten this..."

vs:
I know I have limits to what I can do
The SPCA has a voice--my wife, too
I may have to simply just hope for the best...
Can I offer them as subjects in a clinical test?
I don't know the future or how long I've got
But I am determined there's one thing I'm not
No matter what happens, and whatever it takes,
I'll be here and still kicking when they meet their fate
